Everything you need to know about gallstones and Endoscopic cholangiopancreatography

What is the gallbladder, where is it located, and what is its function?

The gallbladder is more like a sac and is located on the lower surface of the liver on the right side of the abdomen. Its main function is to concentrate the bile juice that is secreted from the liver during the process of absorbing sodium and water. The gallbladder contracts when eating, causing its yellow fluid to aid in the digestion of food to move into the small intestine.

What are gallstones?

Gallstones are formed as a result of solid deposits of bile that are formed in the gallbladder.

The causes and sizes of these stones vary based on variable factors, some of which cannot be controlled and some of which can be controlled.

Symptoms of possible gallstones:

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Pain in the back and right shoulder

  • Pain in the middle of the abdomen or below the breastbone

  • Pain in the upper right side of the abdomen

The causes of gallstones are due to variable factors that cannot be controlled, including:

  • A change in hormones

  • Aging

  • during pregnancy and childbirth

  • Genetic causes and hereditary factors

Variable factors that can be controlled, include:

  • lethargy

  • overweight

  • Lack of the most important nutrients such as vegetables and fruits in the diet

  • Excessive dietary fat intake

How are gallstones diagnosed?

  • Laboratory blood tests

  • Ultrasonography (ultrasound)

80% of gallstones do not cause complications or pain, but in some cases the specialist doctor may have to perform a surgical intervention in the event of possible complications, including:
  • cholecystitis

  • Exiting stones from the gallbladder and blocking the bile ducts

  • pancreatitis

  • The presence of large stones

  • Gallbladder Polyps

  • Medical history

In these cases, the specialist doctor resorts to an endoscopy of the bile ducts, which is similar to a gastroscopy. So, if you suffer from digestive problems, book your appointment now with our specialist doctors
